December 2, 2010 BushwickBK.com music review:
Most of the electro pop bands we feature are strictly instrumental, which we’re all for, but occasionally we miss vocals. What is so immediately attractive about Partners in Stars is that they have a singer perfectly matched to the music they’re making in tone in style. “Courage” is very uncluttered; changes in beats, keys, and movements are singular. There isn’t much overlap, but their sound is full enough that it wouldn’t be called minimalist.
The vocals are very much in a pop music vein, but doesn’t have the repetition of a pop song, allowing the song as a whole to develop more in the way of instrumental electronic pieces rather than relying on a certain hook. And if your brain is craving familiarity, it gets it neatly wrapped up in the chanting of the outro.

Three for the Road
New wave girls and some soft boys deliver the tunes
Macaque, Chinatown EP: Another fem-punk New York new wave outfit, Macaque warble like Bjork and cavort like the Brazilian Girls. Evers’s vocals are seemingly cotton-candy light, but pack a not-so-hidden bite, as she taunts a “Big Man:” “I can’t wait to knock you down.” Chris Hart’s beats are deliriously Garageband simple – you’ll wish you’d thought of them first. But Macaque did. Link on MOLI

Slow/Dynamite + Andy D + Macaque
Goodbye Blue Monday, Brooklyn NY
Headliners Macaque were another of those pleasant GBM-surprises. I knew about the other two acts before the show (though I had no idea that Andy D would be there), but I’d never run across Macaque or their clean, sparse synth-pop before, but it was immediately likeable. Keyboardist Chris Hart’s arrangements were a fairly perfunctory collection of electro lines and handclaps (besides the sublime minimal new wave of “Inappropriately”, easily the set standout) but singer Evers was uncommonly animated (a background in dance is plausible) and together they exuded charm and style. And at their more unusual and stripped down moments, I found myself recalling Telepathe. Apparently the debut Macaque EP is getting a release party at the Knitting Factory Tap Bar on February 7th; Andy D will be joining them once again.
